David Bird – Managing Director
David is the founder and owner of dB Broadcast Limited and has over 35 years’ experience in the broadcast industry. His exceptional track record of achievement in systems integration has led to strong relationships with both broadcast clients and the leading supplier base.
David has guided dB to the top position among systems integrators in the UK with over 50 full time staff and a loyal team of specialist contractors.
David leads from the front and empowers his team to achieve the company’s client-led goals. This has led to a number of accolades, including a listing in the Sunday Times ‘Top 100 fastest growing technology companies’.
David has created a forward-focused, results-driven company with an exciting future.
Tom Swan – Sales and Marketing Director
Tom has huge experience in the broadcast industry stretching over 30 years. After a Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, he gained experience in studio engineering, developing control and router products before transferring into product management.
At Cambridge Instruments he was Product Manager responsible for a range of scanning electron microscopes. Several other high tech sales and marketing roles followed: at Pesa International he ran the full product range, including the acquired Chyron lines. He then gained seven years’ overseas sales experience as International Sales Manager at Cambridge Animation and then at Pixel Power.
Tom joined dB in 2000 and has been Sales & Marketing Director since 2002, managing a team of proposal and sales staff, and is responsible for the company’s marketing strategy and for system sales, system proposals and product sales worldwide direct and through dealers.
Graham Pearl – Engineering Director
In 2013 dB strengthened its management structure with the appointment of Graham Pearl as Engineering Director after being away from the company for a decade. His brief is to ensure the effective and efficient running of the engineering department and to assist in the formulation and implementation of the long term business strategy.
Graham has a keen interest in staff development and has designed a training plan to help meet the industry’s ever changing skill and knowledge requirements.
Throughout his broadcast industry career, Graham has successfully delivered high profile projects for major broadcasters such as the BBC. He holds an Electronic and Electrical degree and a business foundation degree from Loughborough University.
Ross Amory – Financial Director
Ross was appointed Financial Director in 2013, he became a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants in 2007. He has gained considerable experience during his previous roles where he was responsible for leading finance departments and as a central member of the company’s management team at CLS Diagnostics.
At Spicers, Europe’s largest wholesaler of office products, Ross was responsible for the financial reporting of the Division’s activities to the parent company, DS Smith Plc – a FTSE 250 organisation. Whilst at Spicers, Ross also gained experience in investment projects, internal audit, process design and financial forecasting & planning.
Ian Mattison – Operations Director
Ian has 35 years’ experience in the broadcast industry in service, development and manufacturing roles. Much of his early experience was gained at FWO Bauch as a service engineer, in 1985, Ian joined and later ran a new projects division set up to address the growing need for customised products. He has worked on many projects including a large radio and control system for the Commonwealth Games.
Ian has been instrumental in the development of the Hawkeye range of monitoring and switch modules across the Avitel, Vistek and Snell IQ platforms, and managed design and development of dB’s MERlin DVB-T2 receiver as well as products for the Axon Synapse modular system. Ian’s considerable expertise is invaluable in the development and production of customised units, with recent projects including MIDI switching devices for BBC W1.
He was appointed dB’s Operations Director in 2009.
Nigel Hoyland – Development Director
Nigel gained a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Leeds in 1977. He started at FWO Bauch as a Maintenance and Installation Engineer and later joined their Custom Projects group.
Nigel co-founded Second Base in 1990 with Ian Mattison to offer custom-built electronic solutions to the broadcast industry. Projects included tape to CD copying and high speed tape transfer systems for BBC Sound Archives, Committee room audio monitoring system for Westminster Sound, studio foldback for Reuters, Network audio router for BBC Radio 1 and a VCR control system for Ch5. He has also worked on audio projects such as the BBC BH light entertainment relocation.
Nigel has worked with dB Broadcast since 1995 and became Development Director in 2009. Nigel has been responsible for much of the hardware design for the long-established Hawkeye range of modules including the latest IQASI82 and IQDBT105 modules, as well as working on the MERlin receiver and occasional specials for clients such as Red Bee Media.
